You can change your UvAnetID password at any time. Remember, however, that you will have to re-enter your new password wherever it is used.

Follow the steps below to change your UvAnetID password.

Step-by-step instructions
  • 1. Get your computer
    • Do you have a UvA computer? Check if you are connected to VPN. If you have a self-managed UvA computer or a personal laptop, this is not necessary.
    • Close all applications and save your files, as you will need to restart your laptop or computer later in the process.
  • 2. Change your password via id.uva.nl
    • Go to id.uva.nl.
    • Click on ‘I have forgotten my password’ or ‘I want to change my password’.
    • Follow the steps on the website.
    • You will receive a confirmation of the password change on your UvA email from the ICT Services Servicedesk (servicedesk-icts@uva.nl). If a private email address is also known in the Self-Service Tool, you will receive the confirmation there as well.
  • 3. Restart your computer

    Restart your computer.

  • 4. Log in again on all your devices

Immediately update the passwords in all applications, such as Office 365, Teams, OneDrive, email, and calendar. Also, consider various services, such as VPN, printing, and Wi-Fi (uva or eduroam) that you use on those devices.

    Prevent a block

Logging in again and resetting your password is an important step. If you forget this, you risk a blockade of your UvAnetID, for example, if your mail account or wifi connection has stored your old password and attempts to log in multiple times with it. Therefore, always check the following points:

    • Check if passwords are saved in your browser. Sometimes browsers offer to auto-fill passwords on UvA web pages. Make sure you use the new password here.
    • Check if passwords are saved in Credential Manager (Windows). You can start Credential Manager via the Start menu, where you can remove outdated credentials under Windows Credentials. On iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, you can also check the iCloud keychain.
Pointers for changing your UvAnetID password per application or service
  • 1. Change mail (and calendar) password

    On mobile devices

Outlook should automatically prompt you for your new password. If this does not happen or the new password is not accepted, you can find all the information about setting up and using the Outlook app on the Microsoft 365 website.

    • Click on ‘Follow me- xxxCanon’.
    • Click ‘Delete’.

    Step 2: Reinstall the printer

Sometimes the Wi-Fi networks uva or eduroam do not accept your new password and keep asking for it. In that case, you need to reconnect via wifiportal.uva.nl.

Follow the instructions on the page about connecting to the UvA Wi-Fi after changing your UvAnetID password.

  • 5. Resetting VPN
    1. Check if you are connected to VPN.
    2. Do this by typing Ivanti Secure in the search field of your taskbar at the bottom left.
    3. Open Ivanti Secure.
    4. Choose 'Disconnect' if you are still logged in. But you will probably be prompted to log in again with your UvAnetID and new password.
    5. You will see 'UvA VPN connected' with a green-white check mark if your VPN is on.
    6. Need more help? View the manuals for Windows, Mac and Linux on the VPN page.

UvA systems with their own passwords

When you change your UvAnetID password via id.uva.nl (the central database), this change is not automatically carried out in UvA systems that consult a local database.

The following UvA systems retrieve login details from a local database:

Therefore, continue to log in with your username and old password until you change the password yourself in the system.

New password does not work

Does your new UvAnetID password not work immediately? Try logging in again after five minutes with your new password.

If you still cannot log in, please contact the Servicedesk ICT Services.

Change your password anually

All UvA students and staff must change their UvAnetID password annually to work safely digitally.

You will automatically receive an email (+ reminders) when you need to change your password. If you fail to act on this email, your password will automatically expire and your UvAnetID account will be temporarily blocked. As soon as you change your password, the block will be removed and you will be able to use your UvAnetID once again.
