For each of your accounts you use a unique and strong password.

Requirements for a strong UvAnetID password

The following requirements apply to the password of your UvAnetID:

  • The password contains at least 12 characters, with at least 1 number, 1 uppercase letter, 1 lowercase letter and 1 punctuation mark. The longer the password, the better.
  • You do not yet use the password for another account or website. This prevents cybercriminals from accessing multiple accounts at once.
  • The password does not resemble your name, e-mail address or UvAnetID. Make sure the password is not easy to guess.
  • You change your password once a year, after receiving an e-mail reminding you to do so. You must not use the ten previous passwords again. Change the entire password and not just one letter.
  • It is forbidden to lend your password to others. UvA system administrators may and will never ask you for your password.

Other tips

Did you know you can check the strength of your password and check if you have been hacked? It can also be useful to use a password manager.

Check how strong your password is

Do the password cracking test on veiliginternetten.nl to check how secure your password(phrase) is.

Check if you have been hacked

On the websites Check je Hack (Check your Hack) and haveibeenpwned you can see if you were part of a hack or data breach. Change your password immediately if you were part of a hack, and if possible, set up two-factor authentication as well.

Use a password manager

If you use a password manager, you only have to think of and remember one strong password. A password manager will also create strong passwords for you. Examples of password managers are: 1password, bitwarden, dashlane and keepass. Bitwarden can be used free of charge.
