The University of Amsterdam (UvA) wants to ensure a safe and pleasant work and study environment. To do this, we seek a balance between the safety, privacy and protection of people, goods and buildings on the one hand, and public accessibility and admissions systems on the other.

Emergency number: 2222

In the event of emergencies such as fire, accidents, suspicious persons or cases of sickness/injury, call the central emergency number:

T: +31 (0)20 525 2222

This number can be reached day and night, 7 days a week. Alternatively, you can call your building's porter, who will relay the information to the Central Control Room and alert Company Emergency Response.

Unsafe situations in the building and near-accidents must be reported to the Service Desk:

T: +31 (0)20 525 1403 and to the immediate supervisor.

Security

Students and employees must be able to feel safe in the buildings in which they work and study. In order to ensure security, Facility Services uses camera surveillance, admission systems, alarm systems and a Central Control Room.

Porters and security officers

At most UvA buildings, a porter is present during the opening hours of the premises. They ensure that no 'uninvited guests' enter and are the first to respond if there are any problems. All porters have completed a Company Emergency Response training course.

Outside business hours, uniformed security officers carry out regular daily surveillance in and around the buildings and on the grounds. They are always prepared to take your questions or reports.

Safety and security rules

By following a couple of simple rules, you can make an important contribution to your own safety and the safety of others.

  • Remain alert: pay attention to your own safety and that of others. Ask for or provide assistance whenever necessary.
  • Don't leave any valuables unattended. Keep an eye on your bag, laptop and mobile phone.
  • Know your building: know where your workstation is on the premises and where the emergency escape routes are. This information can be found on the maps beside the fire hose reels.
  • Take responsibility: report any dangerous, suspicious or hazardous situations to the porter. Don't just assume that someone else will do it. It’s better we receive too many reports than too few.
  • Follow safety instructions. Don't be headstrong at critical moments and do not endanger your own safety or that of others.
  • Take other people into account. Don't cause any disturbance in or around the building. Ensure that others are able to study and work in peace.
  • Respect others and yourself. Friendliness, courtesy and tolerance for people of other persuasions all help ensure a safe academic environment.
