UvA Honorary Medallion

Every year the UvA awards Honorary Medallions to individuals who have made a special contribution or given exceptional service to the University.

The UvA Honorary Medallions can be awarded to people from all positions, fields of activity, organisational units, career phases and backgrounds. People not employed by the UvA may also be eligible for a Medallion. Nominations for the Medallions can be made by any UvA employee. The Medallions are awarded in June during the so-called Medallion Day.

Nomination and awards procedure

Nominations for the Honorary Medallions should be made in writing, using the form below, and must be endorsed by at least three people. In principle, each nomination is for an individual person. There is no limit to the number of nominations that can be submitted per department or faculty.

Based on the nominations, the UvA Honorary Medallions Committee advises the Executive Board on the awards. In selecting from the nominations, the committee weighs up in particular in which way the effort/contribution(s) of the nominee extended beyond the tasks and responsibilities usually associated with their position or capacity. The selection committee primarily looks at how the person has gone 'above and beyond'.

Nominations for Medallion Day 2025 close on 13 January 2025. Nominations can be submitted to the secretary of the UvA Honorary Medallions Committee, via griffie-cvb@uva.nl. N.B. Only fully completed nomination forms will be considered by the committee (nominations by letter will not be considered).

About the UvA Honorary Medallions Committee

The UvA Honorary Medallions Committee examines all nominations. The committee then advises the Executive Board on whether to award an Honorary Medallion in each case. The committee consists of a dean (who also acts as chairperson); a director of a faculty, service or other management unit; a member of the support and management staff; and a member of the academic staff. The committee is supported by a secretary. For more information about the UvA Honorary Medallion and related procedures, please contact the secretary of the Honorary Medallion Committee via griffie-cvb@uva.nl.
